You’re a real estate pro, not a writer.
Correct! The best thing about blogging is that it allows you to be you. There’s no “right way” to do it. There’s no single formula that works. To be an effective blogger, you don’t need a degree in Creative Writing and you don’t need to be William Faulkner. All you need are a few good ideas and some basic business communication skills.
Blogs can be short or long, simple or complex. Some of the most successful ones are visually driven – they are short on text and long on beautiful images. Goodness knows we live in one of the most beautiful places on planet Earth. So share that. Do you live near an incredible beach? In all likelihood, yes. Share that. Do you hike or surf? Share that. Do you have an Open House with a great view coming up this weekend? Share that. Do you love to golf? Share that. Do you observe market trends to help you make a living? Share those.
If you started a blog of your own today, how long do you think it would take for you to build an audience of 3 million people per year? That’s the audience you’ll be reaching when you blog at hawaiilife.com. I don’t want to hurt your feelings, but you’d probably never get there.
But with just a little thought, effort, persistence, inspiration and a healthy dose of spell check, you’ll be exposing your awesome personality, your professionalism, your market knowledge and your Hawaii life to more than 3 million readers! Somewhere in there are new clients, and your job is to persuade them to call you because you’re an expert in your field and an all-around nice guy or gal! It’s about 4 parts savvy and info – and 1 part personality.
Since you’re already a pro at the art of persuasion – you’re in sales, after all – this should be a breeze! Begin by writing how you talk, and if that fails, record what it is you want to say on your smartphone, then transcribe it later.
Let’s get back to that real estate pro we mentioned earlier. Yes, YOU. Share that. This is an incredible forum for you to talk about your personal brand. If you think you don’t have one, now is your chance to create one. What do you want potential clients to know about you? What real estate knowledge do you want to share? If your client came to you for advice, what would you tell them? Do you love where you live? Tell our readers about those things.
You’re honest? Find a way to show people through your stories. Do you have a family? Share some family-friendly posts about your island. Love mid-century architecture? Talk about that. You’re a whiz when it comes to contracts? Talk about contracts. You like to take pictures in your downtime? Share them! You have a great video of the surf spots near you? Share those vids! Vlog (video blogs) are proven to be the most engaging, captivating kind!
When it comes to blogging, it’s really just a conversation between you and the reader. A positive conversation where you’re enthusiastic about your job, your market, your industry, your island and your home.
Always keep your eyes on the prize! The goal of blogging is lead generation, sparking interest and most of all this: positioning yourself as a subject matter expert (otherwise known as an SME). You want that audience to believe you, trust you, be inspired by you, and also to like you. So you do you! Let your personality shine through! Tell a joke, tell a good story, make sure it flows. Then run your writing through spelling and grammar check. Always. Every time. Don’t ever skip that step.
Happy blogging, vlogging and personal brand building! We look forward to reading your story!
